'Expansive and thoughtful, it illuminates the complexity and elusiveness of his subject' New Statesman

'A rich and generous picture of research into depression to date' Financial Times

What is depression? Is it a persistent low mood or a complex range of symptoms? Is it a single diagnosis or a range of mental disorders requiring different treatments? And is there a way of curing such a complex, and diverse, condition?

A sufferer of depression himself, science writer Alex Riley has spent years thinking about these issues as he was prescribed antidepressants and underwent cognitive behavioural therapy. Throughout his treatment, he wondered-are antidepressants effective? Do short-term talking therapies actually work? And what is on the horizon for those who don't respond to these first-line treatments?
A Cure for Darkness explores all of these questions and more, as the author embarks on a journey to illuminate one of the world's most prevalent disorders.

Weaving personal and family history, the book tracks treatments through centuries of science, from the 'talking cure' to electroconvulsive therapy to magic mushrooms. Reporting on the field of global mental health from its colonial past to the present day, Riley discovers new and exciting therapies, including how a group of grandmothers stands on the frontline of a mental health revolution. A gripping narrative journey,
A Cure for Darkness delves deep into the science of mental health and finds hope at the new frontiers of treatment.

Recensione

A fascinating history of mental health, treatments, practitioners and therapies. ― Evening Standard

It is breezily written, personal and accessible, and it covers a lot of ground. I hope it will be widely read by those who are susceptible to depression, which the author has experienced and which runs in his family, and by policymakers. -- Oliver Kamm ―
The Times

A Cure for Darkness is both a compelling intellectual contribution and an act of generosity. Alex Riley combines meticulous reporting and evocative storytelling to reveal scientists' evolving understanding of depression and the many ways it can be treated. In this candid, accessible, era-spanning book, Riley brings rare sensitivity and lucidity to a topic that has defied comprehension for centuries, weaving a story that is both sweeping in scope and intensely personal. ― Siri Carpenter, science journalist and editor of The Craft of Science Writing

An outstanding achievement ―
Michael Berk, head of the IMPACT Strategic Research Centre at Deakin University, Geelong.

Riley explores the long shadow of depression that winds through human history with intelligence and insight and - equally important - with courage and compassion. The resulting, remarkable book shines like a light against the night itself. ―
Deborah Blum

4,0 su 5 stelle Sehr gute Geschichte der Behandlung der Depression
Recensito in Germania il 7 maggio 2021

5,0 su 5 stelle The best book I have ever read about psychiatry and mental health
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 17 aprile 2021
'A Cure for Darkness: The story of depression and how we treat it' is a sheer masterpiece. I'm not being hyperbolic, this is the best book I have ever read about psychiatry and mental health (forget Lost Connections, Reasons to Stay Alive etc. if there is one book about mental health you want read, look no further than this one). What an outstanding contribution to the field. I am humbled and inspired by this incredible work. I am a Royal College of Psychiatrists award-winning clinical and academic psychiatrist based at the world renowned Maudsley Hospital in London. I have lived experience of a mental health condition and I was blown away by this book. EVERY psychiatrist should read it. Alex brings the psychiatrists he writes about to life with his vivacious style. He is deeply humane in his approach to this challenging topic and he expertly weaves his lived experience into his book. Alex is a master at storytelling and I was gripped from start to finish. I not only feel like a better psychiatrist after reading this book; I feel like a better human being and for that I am extremely grateful to Alex.

4,0 su 5 stelle Mostly very good
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 23 aprile 2021
A balanced and up to date overview of the entire field, and therefore very valuable. It feels more like a synopsis of existing pop science sources than a piece of original research, rather like Bryson's Brief History of Nearly Everything. It also feels markedly journalistic in a number of ways; almost everybody the author actually meets, and some people he doesn't, comes with a description of their hair style. I had never come across "goateed" before, it appears here twice. The editing is simply terrible (though two editors are thanked in the credits): Galen and Hippocrates both put in the wrong century, Hippocrates in the wrong profession and credited with Indian influences which take some explaining. Anna O said to have been already discussed when she hasn't. Yew trees were grown in churchyards to supply wood for bows, but the bows were not for defending the church. And so on, enough to erode confidence in the overall accuracy of the book.

All new treatments for depression are miracles when they are new, and after the passage of a few years turn out to be only about as good as everything else. I think the author is insufficiently critical about the merits of ect and psychedelics (neither new, but both going through a revival).

3,0 su 5 stelle A decent book with a few inconceivable errors
Recensito negli Stati Uniti il 12 settembre 2021
Coming from a depression sufferer, the book is authentic, but how can one trust facts and methods reported by an author who writes about a "German philosopher and conductor Jean-Jacques Rousseau" and who claims that the Danube flows through the Bucharest? What kind of an editor misses such glaring errors? This is simply astounding. There is an unjustified (in regard to their clinical merits) focus on psychedelics, whereas the most promising current medication - ketamine - receives little attention. Dwelling on the history of the treatment of depression is completely irrelevant to what really matters - the now and here.

2,0 su 5 stelle It's about the HISTORY of Depression NOT a Memoir
Recensito negli Stati Uniti il 17 settembre 2021
I should have read the reviews of previous buyers before getting this book. I was very interested in learning on Alex's story when I first read a sample of the audio book, but after getting it, I was very surprised on what this book is really about.
